The all-new Lexus RC coupe

The all-new Lexus RC coupe is expected to make its debut at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, and it’s being reported that the RC F will be powered by a 5.0-liter V8 engine with 455 horsepower.

The Lexus RC is expected to be the Japanese automaker’s main competitor to the BMW 4 Series, and the RC F will clash head-on with the new M4 (but not on price), if these figures turn out to be true.

Inspired by the LFA, the RC F will be built to handle like a true sports car, will have an eight-speed transmission and will be outfitted with plenty of carbon fiber parts.

As for pricing, the RC will launch at around $40,000 late next year, while the RC F will be priced over $100,000. There’s no chance that the new BMW M4 will even come close to that price range, so clearly Lexus is targeting a more exclusive crowd with its RC F model.

Details being reported by Motor Trend include Sachs mono-tube shock absorbers, special control-arm rear suspension, uprated coil springs and stabilizers, specially tuned Lexus Dynamic Handling System, 19-inch BBS wheels and Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 tires will all be found on the RC F model.

Now for the standard RC model, enthusiasts will be happy to hear that it will likely feature a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, a 2.5-liter hybrid variant, and a 3.5-liter V6 engine choice.

The RC F is expected to make its North American debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, with the rest of the RC lineup coming in April at the New York Auto Show.

Honda EV-STER Concept Brings a Sports Car Back to Honda's Lineup
At this year's Tokyo Motor Show, Honda unveiled the EV-STER concept, an electric rear-wheel-drive two-seater convertible sports car. According to the latest reports the concept is headed to production. Honda CEO Takanobu Ito recently spoke with Auto Motor und Sport, in which he revealed that the roadster could be launched with either electric or gasoline powertrains. The concept is powered by a 78 horsepower electric motor with lithium-ion batteries and has a range of 100 miles on a single charge. According to the German magazine, the production version of the EV-STER could arrive as early as next year
Suzuki now third in Japanese Car Market
For the first time ever, Suzuki is in third place in the Japanese domestic automotive market trailing behind Toyota and Nissan, overtaking Honda for combined sales of light commercial vehicles and passenger cars. As per the financial daily Nikkei Shimbun, Suzuki sold 587,874 passenger cars and commercial vehicles, behind Toyota (1,417,984) and Nissan (670,096) and ahead of Honda (581,249) and Daihatsu (524,381) between January and October 2006. So what made this possible? Despite the Japanese econominc recovery, regular car sales are going down. However it is interesting to note that there is a boom of mini car or kei car in Japan now. These are low cost tiny cars limited to 660 cc engines. Suzuki, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi are the only three companies producing kei cars at the present. Kei cars now account for 35% of unit sales in Japan痴 6 million a year car market. A new kei car costs around one million yen ($9000). These mini cars are cheaper to produce and also receive tax benefits from the government. Japanese people do not want to pay more for luxurious cars nowadays as they look at cars as a normal commodity. As Suzuki is the leader in Kei cars, its domestic sales overtook Honda making it the third best automaker in Japanese domestic market now. Suzuki痴 success in other countries such as India, Pakistan and Hungary is also due to the low cost mini cars it produces there. Japanese Auto Car Dealers

The biggest focus of trade talks this month in Tokyo appears to be Japan’s auto industry.

“Right now all foreign penetration of the Japanese auto market is 6%, and so everyone believes there’s a long way to go before we can really say the Japanese market is open,” U.S. Trade Representative Mike Froman told reporters in Washington on Friday. The concern with Japan isn’t tariffs but “a number of voluntary measures that have been employed over the years that have had an adverse effect on auto imports, whether it’s from the U.S. or Korea or Europe.”

Mr. Froman is traveling to Tokyo on Aug. 19 to discuss Japan’s entry into the Trans-Pacific Partnership, which includes many Asian and Pacific Ocean countries but not China. He’ll also gather with officials from TPP countries in Brunei on Aug. 22 and 23.

Currently, other U.S. officials, including Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative Wendy Cutler, are holding bilateral talks with Japan on trade issues including beef, insurance and cars.

Japan recently loosened restrictions on U.S. beef. Meanwhile, Japan Post Holdings Co., a government-controlled titan in financial services, last month announced an insurance alliance with American Family Life Assurance Co. Still, U.S. officials are seeking more progress in the insurance and agricultural sectors in Japan.

But Japan’s auto market is the crown jewel, and Washington is under pressure from Michigan lawmakers and domestic automakers to improve conditions for U.S. cars there. Detroit is worried that the cheaper yen and moves to eliminate U.S. tariffs will boost sales of Japanese cars.

Still, in cars and other sectors, U.S. companies and officials are well aware that previous efforts to win greater access to Japanese markets haven’t always borne fruit.

“We all bear the scars of trying to open Japan’s markets in the past,” Mr. Froman said. “So we go into this with our eyes wide open.”

The Japanese based automaker Toyota has recently announced the launch of the Corolla Hybrid on its local auto market, where the model is apparently eligible for a 100 percent tax waiver.

TOKYO  -- According to the car manufacturer, the Toyota Corolla Hybrid is available to its future customers in Japan in two body styles, the Corolla Axio (Sedan) and the Corolla Fielder (Estate), and prices for the first one have been set at 1,925 million YEN while for the second one at 2.09 million YEN. The two brand new “green” versions of the Toyota Corolla are said to be eligible for a 100 percent tax waiver on their local auto market.

Toyota says that the new Corolla Hybrid is powered, on both body styles, by the same 1.5 liter petrol engine, which is good for 74 PS, mated to a THS-II (Toyota Hybrid System) hybrid module, where the electric motor is providing an extra 61 PS. The battery is nickel-metal and it will help the Corolla Hybrid return 33 km/L. As for the goodies list, this will include the 4.2-inch screen on the instrument console, automatic headlights, collision warning system and much more. The hybrid version will not differentiate from the regular variant except for the new Light Blue Metallic exterior color.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has been urging Japan’s companies to spend their growing piles of money to bolster the country’s economy. Toyota Motor Corp., with cash swelling to about $37 billion, is beginning to comply.

The car-maker said on Aug. 2 that net income almost doubled to 562.2 billion yen ($5.7 billion) last quarter -- more than General Motors Co. and Volkswagen AG combined -- as U.S. sales rose and the weaker yen boosted overseas profit. Cash and marketable securities rose 11 percent and totaled the most of any non-bank in Japan, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Toyota is starting to spread the wealth. The company is raising capital spending and research expenditures 10 percent this fiscal year, paying workers the highest bonuses since 2008, and planning higher dividends as income surges. The moves show how Abe’s efforts to revive Japan’s economy are gaining support from the country’s biggest exporter and may foreshadow spending by more Japanese companies.

“Abenomics is on its way to creating a better environment for companies,” Toshihiro Nagahama, chief economist at Dai-Ichi Life Research Institute in Tokyo, said by phone. “What Toyota spends its cash pile on may provide a hint of the future of Abenomics.”

The conservative approach of top Japanese companies has been a challenge for Abe as he tries to jump start an economy that has stagnated for two decades. The companies’ cash reached a record 225 trillion yen in the first quarter of this year, exceeding the size of Italy’s economy.
